5 leadership voices every executive must cultivate

Leaders must be able to not only invoke authority, but also utilize a number of different voices to effectively inspire and guide their employees, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Here are the five voices every good leader must be able to call upon.

1. The voice of character. This voice is very important because it expresses the values you hold as fundamental to your character. Accessing this voice gives your employees an essential idea of who you are as a person.

2. The voice of context. If you have risen to a leadership position, it means you have gained a lot of experience that helps inform your decisions. When discussing your decision-making process with others, frame your decisions in the context of your past experiences.

3. The voice of clarity. Leaders who say whatever comes to mind publicly risk losing the respect of their employees. When you choose to share ideas, make sure you are using your voice of clarity.

4. The voice of curiosity. As a leader, it is often uncomfortable to admit what you don't know, but don't be afraid to show your curious side and let your employees know that education is a lifelong pursuit.

5. The voice of connection. As your network grows, it can often become harder to connect with the many people you meet. Your voice of connection should be honest and eager to learn.
