At the VHA 2013 Navigating to Excellence Forum in Las Vegas on May 1, 2013, panelists in the session “Navigating the Regulatory, Economic and Consumer Landscape” were asked to share the biggest gap they see in moving from the current state of healthcare to one that meets the triple aim: higher quality care, lower costs and better population health.
1. “Incomplete information technology systems." - David Cutler, PhD, the Otto Eckstein professor of applied economics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University
2. “Working with the full continuum of care.” - Marianne Udow-Phillips, MHSA, director of the Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation and a lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Public Health
3. “Cultural change. We have to move from rescue care…to one where we’re keeping people healthy or well, and when they do have illness or disease, we treat it.” - Dan Wolterman, president and CEO of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System
4. “Hospitals understanding of where opportunities for cost savings are internally.” - Meredith Rosenthal, PhD, associate professor of health economics and policy at Harvard School of Public Health
5. “Physician education. We’re such much more entrenched [as administrators], and I don’t think our physician colleagues [share the same understanding.]” - Steve Miff, PhD, senior vice president of VHA
