The nurses, who are members of the California Nurses Association, recently held a strike May 1. They are protesting concessions they claim are demanded by management, including the elimination of paid sick days, requirements for nurses to pay for their own healthcare and as well as that of their families, and the elimination of retiree health plans. Nurses say management with Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health has not made any compromises in negotiations.
A Sutter Health spokesperson said the nurses are highly compensated, earning an annual average of $136,000, but that union leaders “want double-digit wage increases and free healthcare for life, which will increase costs at our hospitals by tens of millions of dollars each year,” according to the report.
Sutter Health will bring in replacement nurses to make up for those who are striking.
