Dr. Dudley’s strategies, which have been implemented by Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Hospital, are briefly outlined below:

  1. Teach leadership skills. Brigham and Women’s has a Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, which offers a variety of leadership programs. The Brigham Leadership Program teaches traditional leadership strategies, the Clinical Process Improvement Leadership Program develops leadership in innovation, and other programs focus on negotiation skills, female leadership and mentorship.
  2. Give physicians a chance to lead. Brigham and Women’s facilitates hospital-wide and department-specific leadership projects to improve care. Through one such project, the Physicians Organization Care Redesign Incubator, physicians identified $1.2 million in net savings through proposed projects to improve care and cut costs, according to Dr. Dudley.
  3. Create a culture of accountability. The Boston hospital uses data transparency and financial incentives to hold physicians accountable for their performance.
  4. Share success stories of physician leaders. Brigham and Women’s allows physician leaders to share their success stories at social events to inspire future leadership.
