Here are three ways leaders can support their colleagues.

1. Containment. It is vital for managers to foster an emotionally supportive space where their employees feel heard. Leaders should make sure to ask questions that encourage employees to share their emotions to ensure that they do not react impulsively.

2. Empathetic acknowledgement. Leaders should provide the kind of validation that enhances people’s self esteem.

3. Enabling perspective. Leaders should help give each person a sense of perspective about emotionally stressful situations and figure out what actions can be taken to rectify them.
