3 keys for leaders trying to balance humility and authority

Good leaders must exercise humility, but being humble is not an automatic path to effective team outcomes. Instead, leaders must utilize their humility strategically, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Here are three things to know.

1. Match your level of humility with team expectations. Humility will only increase team effectiveness if team members are expecting that characteristic. However, if teams are expecting leaders to be distant and wield their power broadly, excessive humility could be perceived as a weakness.

2. Encourage creativity by helping the flow of information. Humble leadership can lead to employees feeling like they are in a safe space, which will facilitate an open dialogue between team members.

3. Develop your humility. Though many consider humility an inherent characteristic, it is a skill that can be developed, and leaders can practice exercising humble behaviors.
