Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) are co-sponsors of the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act and Advancing Medical Resident Training in Community Hospitals Act.

The first piece of legislation will raise the caps on Medicare-funded residency positions while the second will make it easier for hospitals that have previously had part-time residency programs to create full-time programs.

The Association of American Medical Colleges predicts that by 2025 the country will experience a shortage of 61,400 to 94,700 physicians.
