10 things to know about San Juan Regional Medical Center

Farmington, N.M.-based San Juan Regional Medical Center is a 194-bed acute care hospital in the Four Corners Region, serving patients from New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Utah.

Here’s what you should know about the community hospital:

1. SJRMC features an 18-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital, as well as a Level III trauma center, cancer center and wound treatment center. SJRMC operates San Juan Health Partners specialty clinics throughout San Juan County and Southern Colorado.

2. San Juan Health Partners Spine Center offers the only neurosurgery program in the region. San Juan Regional Heart Center was New Mexico’s first to invest in the Impella Heart Pump and use the Impella RP.

3. Jeff Bourgeois was appointed SJRMC’s president and CEO in 2016. He previously served as San Antonio, Texas-based CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital, Westover Hills’ president and administrator.

4. Det Norske Veritas accredited SJRMC. It is a certified primary stroke center and accredited chest pain center with primary PCI.

5. Quality New Mexico bestowed the Roadrunner Recognition award upon San Juan Regional Medical Center in 2017 to recognize the hospital’s advancements in systematic processes and outcomes.

6. In 2017, SJRMC was the state’s only medical provider to receive four Certificates for Excellence in Quality Improvement from HealthInsight New Mexico. The center earned the distinctions for improved outcomes in emergency department arrival to provider contact, stroke education, sepsis bundle compliance and outpatient pain management for long bone fracture.

7. SJRMC has won the Mission: Lifeline EMS gold award three times for superior cardiac care.

8. G.W. Sammons, MD, and A.M. Smith, MD, opened the center in 1910, two years before New Mexico was granted statehood.

9. The San Juan Medical Foundation established the Connelly Hospitality House to provide lodging for cancer patients and their families, as well as the Cathy Lincoln Cancer Fund, Riley Men’s Health Fund and Children’s Health Fund.

10. The number of patients treated at SJRMC’s emergency department has nearly doubled since 1998, Vice President of Strategic Planning Todd Bille told the Farmington Daily Times. The department will undergo a $2.5 million renovation to meet the increasing demand and accommodate the 69,000 patients expected to visit this year.
