10 states that would pay most to stick with Medicaid expansion under AHCA

Thirty-two states expanded Medicaid coverage under the ACA, but a new study from the Center of Budget and Policy Priorities finds that under the American Health Care Act — the version passed by the House May 4 — states would have to shoulder higher costs without matching federal dollars to sustain the expansion.

Below is a list of the states that would have to pay the most annually to support their expanded Medicaid programs without matching federal grants. The first year of this shift would be 2021.

  1. California, $5.71 billion
  2. New York, $3.91 billion
  3. Massachusetts, $1.15 billion
  4. Washington, $878 million
  5. Illinois, $864 million
  6. Illinois, $809 million
  7. Ohio, $735 million
  8. Michigan, $582 million
  9. Pennsylvania, $535 million
  10. Maryland, $498 million
