Three labor unions filed a lawsuit in New York County’s Supreme Court, alleging the HHC layoffs would hurt patient and employee safety. The Supreme Court justice issued a permanent injunction to halt the layoffs last year, with a mid-level court stating the HHC did not properly analyze how the layoffs could impact safety, according to the news report.
Mayor Bloomberg said the layoffs were necessary for cost-savings. The issue went back to an appellate court, which ruled “neither the petitioners nor the courts should be permitted to substitute their judgment for the discretionary management of the public business by public officials, as neither have been lawfully charged with that responsibility,” according to the news report.
The layoffs affect carpenters, electricians and laborers, according to the news report.
