74% of Hospitals Report Increase in Bariatric Surgeries

Seventy-four percent of hospitals had an increase in the number of bariatric surgeries in the past 18 months, according to the 2012 Bariatric Report by Novation, a healthcare supply chain company.

The report includes responses from 178 member hospitals of hospital network companies VHA and UHC. More than half of respondents spent more on the treatment of morbidly obese patients in the last 12 to18 months than they had in previous years.

Other key report findings include:

•    Hospitals estimated the treatment of morbidly obese patients cost between $200 and $5 million in the last 12 to 18 months.
•    Beds account for the highest total costs and/or the greatest increase in bariatric product spending at member facilities.
•    Thirty-six percent of hospitals said they renovated their facilities in the past year to accommodate morbidly obese patients, with an estimated cost of $12,000 to $4 million.
