WellStar Moves Forward With $800M Expansion

Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health System will spend around $800 million over the next decade in expansions and improvements, including a new outpatient campus and a new hospital, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The $14 million outpatient campus, which will be built in Acworth, Ga., will feature physician offices and a diagnostic and imaging center. However, the campus is the subject of a lawsuit over the property’s rezoning, which may delay the construction, according to the report.

The $100 million hospital, which will be built in Hiram, Ga., will replace the health system’s 50-year-old facility in Dallas, Ga. Currently, WellStar is waiting on state approval, which it hopes to receive early next year, and expects construction to be completed in 2013.

Additionally, WellStar plans a $120 million upgrade of its information technology systems, which officials said will better track patients’ medical histories and cut down on errors, and a $40 million healthcare park at a location to be determined. The health system plans on expanding several service lines, including oncology, orthopedics, cardiology and women and babies, according to the report.

WellStar noted that the economy could force the delay or scaling back of some of the elements in the expansion.
