Dr. Bookman retired as director of emergency medicine in 2009, but stayed on as CMO to become more involved in the hospital’s strategic planning efforts.

Under his guidance, in July 2012 YVMC was rated the safest hospital in Colorado and in October 2014 the hospital opened the Gloria Gossard Breast Health Center. He also helped solidify YVMC’s affiliation with the Mayo Clinic, formalized in October 2014. Under the affiliation agreement, physicians associated with YVMC can consult electronically with Mayo Clinic staff.
