Virginia children’s health system CEO sets retirement; leadership shuffle ensues

James Dahling, president and CEO of Hampton Roads, Va.-based Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, will retire in 2023 after nearly 20 years in the role.

Mr. Dahling has served the health system since 1994, first serving as vice president and chief operating officer according to a Dec. 2 news release. He became president and CEO in 2003. Under Mr. Dahling’s leadership, the health system expanded to several health and surgery centers and bolstered many of its programs including primary care, surgery, oncology, cardiac, neonatology and trauma. 

Amy Sampson, the health system’s vice president and chief engagement and innovation officer, will succeed Mr. Dahling. Ms. Sampson has served the health system since 1990, according to the release. 

Additionally, Christopher Foley, MD, the health system’s vice president and chief of medicine will be promoted to chief clinical operations officer, the release said. Dr. Foley, a pediatric intensive care specialist, has served the health system since 1996.
