The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque has named Steve McLaughlin, MD, CEO of UNM Hospital and vice president of clinical affairs, effective Dec. 6.
Dr. McLaughlin will succeed Kate Becker, who shared plans to retire earlier in 2026, according to an Oct. 14 university news release.
Since June, Dr. McLaughlin has served as interim vice president of clinical affairs, working to integrate UNM Health’s clinical delivery system. He previously served as chief medical officer of UNM Hospital and chair of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine’s department of emergency medicine.
Dr. McLaughlin also continues to practice as a physician at UNM Hospital and holds teaching responsibilities at the university.
In his new role, he will lead an organization that operates New Mexico’s only level 1 trauma center and academic medical center, employs more than 12,000 healthcare workers and cares for more than 1 million patients annually.
