University of Virginia EVP for health affairs to retire: 5 takeaways

Richard P. Shannon, MD, executive vice president for health affairs at Charlottesville-based University of Virginia, is retiring in May, according to The Daily Progress.

Five takeaways:

1. Dr. Shannon has served in the role for six years, overseeing key components of the UVA Health System.

2. He was previously the Frank Wister Thomas Professor and department of medicine chair at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

3. He also has experience serving as chair of the department of medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

4. He is a teaching fellow for the Institute of Healthcare Improvement.

5. Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Medical Center CEO Pamela Sutton-Wallace will become acting executive vice president for health affairs following Dr. Shannon's departure.
