The University of Miami Health System named Stephen L. Demers COO, effective Jan. 21.

1. Mr. Demers currently serves as senior vice president for ambulatory and clinical services at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Mass.

2. He has prior experience as COO of surgery department at University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia.

3. He was the founding principal/COO of Tampa, Fla.-based Surgical Safety Institute, a company that helped hospitals implement aviation safety techniques in their operating rooms.

4. Mr. Demers has worked in the military, serving in several roles including as director of administration at a naval branch medical clinic.

5. He holds an MBA from Boston-based Northeastern University.
