UNC Health Appalachian CEO to retire

Chuck Mantooth, president and CEO of Boone, N.C.-based UNC Health Appalachian, will retire Jan. 1.

Mr. Mantooth has held the role since 2017 and has worked in the health system since 1992, according to a July 12 news release from UNC Health Appalachian.

He led the affiliation with Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health in 2023 while at the organization formerly known as Appalachian Regional Healthcare System.

Mr. Mantooth also oversaw the opening of facilities such as the Schaefer Family Patient Care Tower, which opened in 2023 as Watauga Medical Center’s main entrance and emergency department. He also led the development of the MAHEC Boone Family Medicine Residency Program, the release said.
