Mercy and Steward entered into a non-binding letter of intent in August. Mercy was to remain a Catholic organization, continuing with the mission of one of its sponsors, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in Silver Spring, Md.
According to the report, Steward and Mercy failed to reach a definitive agreement and the letter of intent was terminated; however, no specific reasons for the deal’s failure were given.
The dissolution of the potential deal coincides with Mercy Health’s letter of intent to be acquired by Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems in Brewer.
