St. Joseph Hoag Health CEO Dr. Richard Afable to retire in December

Irvine, Calif.-based St. Joseph Hoag Health CEO Richard Afable, MD, plans to retire by the end of the year. Dr. Afable also serves as executive vice president of Providence St. Joseph Health Southern California Region-Orange County/High Desert.

Dr. Afable served as St. Joseph Hoag Health CEO since its inception in 2013, when St. Joseph Health and Hoag affiliated creating a seven-hospital system. Previously, he was CEO of Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif., for eight years.

Dr. Afable is chair-elect of the California Hospital Association as well as the immediate past chair of the Hospital Association of Southern California.

Once he retires from his current posts in December 2017, Dr. Afable plans to focus his efforts on expanding mental health services in the region.He is forming a coalition of public and private organizations for that purpose.
