Steve Littleson’s last day as president and CEO of Lewiston-based Central Maine Healthcare was Feb. 17 — one day after the system was acquired by Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Foundation.

Allen Stefanek was appointed interim CEO, effective Feb. 17, and had been closely involved in Central Maine Healthcare’s transition and ongoing operations in the months leading up to his appointment, a Prime Healthcare spokesperson said in a March 30 statement shared with Becker’s.

“We thank [Mr. Littleson] for his leadership and service to the organization and the community during an important period of transition,” the spokesperson said.

The foundation, which is Prime Healthcare’s nonprofit public charity, received state approval to acquire the Maine system in late November. The transaction included three hospitals, a cancer care center, a long-term care facility, an assisted living facility, the Maine College of Health Professions and more than 40 physician practices.

Mr. Stefanek’s goals are to build upon Central Maine Healthcare’s legacy of service while bringing the investment, technology and operational strength needed to enhance quality, the spokesperson said.

“Our focus has been on ensuring quality, stability, continuity of care and support for patients, caregivers and staff,” the spokesperson said. “As part of the transition, we are strengthening leadership in key areas to support clinical quality and operations, including the appointment of Marlon Margarejo, MSN, RN, as chief nursing officer at Central Maine Medical Center.”

Mr. Margarejo stepped into the role March 16 and brings more than a decade of progressive healthcare leadership experience in value-based care, acute care operations and nursing administration, the spokesperson said.
