Phoenix Children’s promoted four physicians to division chief roles overseeing pediatric critical care, cardiovascular intensive care, nephrology and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Sandra Buttram, MD, was promoted to vice president and chief of pediatric critical care, according to an Oct. 5 health system news release. Dr. Buttram has been an attending physician at Phoenix Children’s for 15 years and will lead the pediatric intensive care unit and critical care.
Kevin Hummel, MD, was promoted to vice president and chief of cardiovascular intensive care. He joined the health system in 2024 and will lead a multidisciplinary team caring for children recovering from heart surgery and receiving treatment for complex congenital and acquired heart conditions.
Karen Papez, MD, was promoted to vice president and chief of nephrology. She has been on staff since 2007 and previously served as director of pediatric critical care nephrology for the past 11 years. She will oversee the system’s pediatric nephrology division, including Arizona’s only dedicated pediatric dialysis center and the state’s only dedicated pediatric kidney transplant program, according to the release.
Ray Stanford, DO, was named vice president and chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation. He joined Phoenix Children’s in 2021 and has served as medical director of the inpatient rehabilitation unit and co-director of the cerebral palsy program.
