Joseph MacDonald, DO, became chief medical officer of Penn State Health Lancaster (Pa.) Medical Center April 7.
Dr. MacDonald joins the Hershey, Pa.-based health system from UPMC, where he most recently served as chair of the department of medicine at UPMC Harrisburg. Over the course of his career, he has also served as president of the medical staff at UPMC Lititz and co-led hospitalist services across seven UPMC hospitals in Central Pennsylvania.
Before joining UPMC, Dr. MacDonald practiced as a primary care physician and hospitalist in Lancaster for more than a decade. He also brings military medical leadership experience to his new role, having served as a U.S. Army major and battalion surgeon during active duty with the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq from 2001 to 2004.
At Penn State Health, Dr. MacDonald will oversee clinical care delivery at Lancaster Medical Center, with a focus on advancing operational efficiency and patient outcomes.
