Michael Kupferman, MD, has been named CEO of Hershey, Pa.-based Penn State Health, effective June 23. He will succeed Deborah Addo, who has served as interim CEO since last fall after Steve Massini retired Oct. 1 from the role.

In his new role, Dr. Kuperman will oversee the $4.2 billion health system, working with Penn State College of Medicine Dean Karen Kim, MD, and other Penn State College of Medicine and university leaders, according to a May 28 news release.

Prior to his new role, Dr. Kupferman served as president of the Banner University Medicine Division and senior vice president of the physician enterprise for Phoenix-based Banner Health. He also served as senior vice president of clinical and academic network development at Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Kupferman is a researcher and fellowship-trained head and neck cancer surgeon. He has previously been funded by the National Institutes of Health. Along with his CEO duties, Dr. Kupferman plans to continue providing care for head and neck cancer patients and will teach residents, fellows and medical students as a professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, the release said.
