Penn State Health selects new CEO: 7 things to know

Hershey, Pa.-based Penn State Health named Stephen M. Massini CEO, effective upon the retirement of Craig Hillemeier, MD, this year.

Seven things to know:

1. Mr. Massini is currently executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Penn State Health.

2. He assumed his current role in 2016 and has prior experience serving as CFO of Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, the health system’s flagship facility.

3. Before joining Penn State Health, he worked in leadership roles at Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger and Pittsburgh-based Highmark.

4. Mr. Massini is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

5. He succeeds Dr. Hillemeier, who plans to retire in the summer.

6. Following Dr. Hillemeier’s retirement announcement, Penn State Health’s board of directors decided to split the roles of Penn State Health CEO and dean of the institution’s affiliated medical school, which were previously held by the same person.

7. Mr. Massini will serve as CEO of the health system, while the university searches for a new medical school dean.
