Miami Cancer Institute taps Dr. Michael Zinner as 1st CEO: 10 things to know

Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida, which is scheduled to open in 2016, has appointed Michael Zinner, MD, a founding CEO and executive medical director.

Here are 10 things to know about Dr. Zinner.

1. He is a world-renowned and highly respected cancer surgeon and researcher.

2. He has expertise in pancreatic-hepatobiliary diseases.

3. Dr. Zinner comes to Miami Cancer Institute from Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center in Boston, where he was clinical director, and surgeon-in-chief at Brigham and Women's Hospital. 

4. He is also the Moseley Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston and founder of Harvard's Center for Surgery and Public Health.

5. Additionally, Dr. Zinner is co-founder and co-director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a multidisciplinary clinical program of surgeons, oncologists, radiation therapists, radiologists and pathologists.

6. He is an accomplished author, writing more than 230 academic papers.

7. He is an editorial board member of Annals of Surgery, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

8. Previously, Dr. Zinner was chairman of the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons. He is currently vice chairman of the board of regents.

9. Dr. Zinner received his medical degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville and did his surgical residency at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Hospital.

10. "Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Zinner has been widely recognized for his extraordinary clinical accomplishments, his contributions to cancer treatment and research, and his mentorship to students, physicians and researchers worldwide," Jack Ziffer, PhD, MD, executive vice president and chief physician executive at Baptist Health South Florida, said in a news release. "Dr. Zinner's esteemed reputation will help us attract and retain the best and brightest experts in cancer care, who will deliver evidence-based treatments to our patients."
