MetroHealth taps longtime Cleveland Clinic leader to chair medicine

Cleveland-based MetroHealth has named John Vargo, MD, chair of its department of medicine.

Dr. Vargo spent more than 30 years at Cleveland Clinic, where he held several clinical and leadership roles. Most recently, he served as director of enterprise endoscopy operations and research.

He also served three years in the U.S. Navy at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center in Maryland, where he was director of endoscopy and a consultant in gastroenterology to the U.S. Capitol. He returned to Cleveland Clinic after his military service, according to a Dec. 15 news release.

At MetroHealth, Dr. Vargo will oversee a range of specialties, including hospital medicine, gastroenterology, oncology and cardiology.
