Mr. Varnum has been vice president of professional services at Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines in Iowa since 2003. He will begin his new position in October.
Mr. Varnum is replacing Jim FitzPatrick, who resigned earlier this year to take a position with Mercy in Des Moines, Iowa, according to the report.
