Mayo Clinic taps education executive, medical school dean

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic has named Nneka Comfere, MD, as the Juanita Kious Waugh Executive Dean of Education and dean of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, effective in early January.

Dr. Comfere succeeds Fredric Meyer, MD, who served in the role for nearly 10 years, according to a Dec. 12 health system news release. She is a physician with joint appointments in dermatology and laboratory medicine and pathology, and currently chairs the division of dermatopathology and cutaneous immunopathology in Mayo’s department of dermatology. She also serves on Mayo Clinic’s board of governors and board of trustees. 

In addition to her educational and clinical leadership, Dr. Comfere is medical director of the digital health, artificial intelligence and innovations program within the dermatology department.

She will work to advance recruitment, training and retention of Mayo Clinic’s future workforce and will partner with John Poe, chair of education administration.
