Mr. Magoon will become emeritus CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2020, and support the transition for one year in that role.
Mr. Magoon joined Lurie Children’s 42 years ago and assumed the top post at the hospital in 1997. During his tenure, the hospital moved to the Streeterville campus of its academic partner, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The hospital also grew from 288 to 364 beds under his leadership.
Thomas Shanley, MD, will succeed Mr. Magoon. Dr. Shanley is the chair of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and president and chief research officer of the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute at Lurie Children’s.
Dr. Shanley has worked at Lurie Children’s since 2015, prior to which he was associate dean of clinical and translational research at Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Medical School.
