Michael McCoy, MD, will step down as president and CEO of West Burlington, Iowa-based Great River Health to devote his full attention to his family during a difficult time, according to a July 25 Facebook post from the system.
The board shared the leadership change July 24 and has appointed Jeremy Alexander, who has served as CFO, as interim president and CEO, effective immediately. The board will determine the process for selecting a permanent leader.
Before leading Great River Health, Dr. McCoy practiced as an OB-GYN in southeast Iowa for many years, according to the post. He was named acting CEO in 2022 after his predecessor resigned and has led the system for the past four years.
“Dr. McCoy has devoted his career to caring for others, first as a physician and then as the leader of Great River Health,” board chair John McKillip said in the statement. “His impact reaches far beyond our hospitals and clinics.”
Mr. Alexander previously served as a member of the executive leadership team, according to the post. The board expressed confidence in his ability to lead the organization through the transition.
Great River Health serves southeast Iowa, west-central Illinois and northeast Missouri. The system includes Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center campuses in Fort Madison and West Burlington, Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant and more than 30 clinics, according to its website.
