Indiana system taps leaders ahead of 4-hospital acquisition

South Bend, Ind.-based Beacon Health System has named leaders to new roles ahead of its planned acquisition of Ascension Michigan’s southwest region.

Carl Risk, president of Elkhart (Ind.) General Hospital, will become president of Borgess Hospital and integration executive for the Ascension Michigan facilities, according to a May 28 Beacon news release.

The acquisition — expected to close in summer 2025 — includes four hospitals: Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Ascension Borgess Allegan Hospital, Ascension Borgess-Lee Hospital in Dowagiac and Ascension Borgess-Pipp Hospital in Plainwell. It will also include 35 outpatient clinics and an ASC.

Beacon also announced two other leadership changes: 

  • Michael Johnson, vice president of operations at Elkhart General, will serve as the hospital’s interim president.
  • Kari Snyder, executive director of nursing at Elkhart General, will become vice president of nursing at Borgess Hospital.

Beacon Health operates seven hospitals and employs more than 8,100 people across Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan.
