Hospitals have posted 103 CEO exits through the first eight months of 2026, up 21% from 85 in the same period last year, according to a report from global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas published Sept. 24.

Five things to know:

1. Hospitals reported 15 CEO exits in August, up from seven in both July and August 2025. The sector is one of the few running ahead of last year’s pace. Among the 29 industries Challenger tracks, hospitals are one of six running ahead of last year’s year-to-date pace.

2. Across all industries, CEO exits rose 55% to 186 in August from 120 in July, and are up 27% from the 146 recorded in August 2025.

3. Through the first eight months of 2026, 1,226 CEO exits have been announced across all industries, down 18% from 1,504 in the same period last year. It is the lowest year-to-date total since 2022, when 895 exits were recorded through August.

4. “CEO exits increased in August as companies assess leadership ahead of the final quarter of the year,” Andy Challenger, labor expert and chief revenue officer at the firm, said in the report. He said rising interest rates may ease inflation in the final quarter, while the war in Iran is pushing up energy prices, and boards may be preparing for that uncertainty.

5. Across all industries, retirement led all reasons for departure in August with 50 exits, followed by stepping down with 44. The two categories accounted for just over half of the month’s departures. CEOs whose interim periods ended drove 22 exits, the most of any month this year.
