Mr. Whelan most recently served as vice president of strategy for the division.
In his new position, he will be responsible for planning, business development, network integration and service line development across HCA Healthcare TriStar, the release said.
The division, part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, has 17 hospitals in Tennessee and Kentucky.
