Scott Brakenridge, MD, professor of surgery in the Division of Trauma, Burn & Critical Care Surgery at Seattle-based Harborview Medical Center, has been appointed chair of the National Institutes of Health’s Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award Study Section.
Dr. Brakenridge will serve as chair from 2026 to 2028. The MIRA study section oversees scientific peer review of grant applications tied to one of NIH’s premier investigator-initiated research programs, evaluating proposals for rigor and scientific merit, according to a July 21 news release.
The role places Dr. Brakenridge among a small group of surgeon-scientists tasked with leading federal peer review for biomedical research funding. Study section chairs help determine which research proposals advance for NIH funding consideration.
Harborview Medical Center, part of UW Medicine, is the only level 1 adult and pediatric trauma and burn center in Washington state.
