The founding director of Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, Max Wicha, MD, will retire and move to emeritus status Oct. 31.
Dr. Wicha joined the University of Michigan in 1980 and founded the cancer center in 1986, according to a Sept. 10 news release from the university.
Under his leadership, the Rogel Cancer Center earned a National Cancer Institute cancer center designation in 1988, which was elevated to a comprehensive cancer center designation in 1990.
Dr. Wicha served as cancer center director until 2013. His leadership was critical to establishing the Forbes Institute for Cancer Discovery in 2016 with a $17.5 million gift from Sidney and Madeline Forbes, the release said.
