Carlos Migoya will step down as CEO of Miami-based Jackson Health System on May 31.
The Public Health Trust board voted unanimously to name David Zambrana, PhD, DNP, RN, as Mr. Migoya’s successor, according to a Jan. 29 health system news release. Dr. Zambrana is Jackson’s current president and COO, a role he has held while working alongside Mr. Migoya for the last six years.
Dr. Zambrana began his career 35 years ago as a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He previously served as CEO of University of Miami Hospital and CEO of Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Migoya, who spent more than 40 years in banking before joining Jackson in 2011, led a financial turnaround at the health system, which had been operating at a loss. Under his leadership, Jackson ended every year since 2011 with a surplus, the release said.
He also spearheaded Jackson’s expansion, including a $2 billion capital plan backed by the $830 million Jackson Miracle-Building Bond program, which was approved by 65% of Miami-Dade voters in 2013. Projects included hospital renovations, new construction and a network of urgent care centers.
Jackson Health System operates its flagship Jackson Memorial Hospital, three community hospitals, a children’s and women’s hospital, a behavioral health hospital and several other care sites. It also has an academic partnership with the University of Miami.
