Emory University School of Medicine names renowned epidemiologist as interim dean

Dr. Carlos del Rio has been appointed interim dean of Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. He will also serve as the chief academic officer for Emory Healthcare.

Dr. del Rio is widely known for his work as an epidemiologist and infectious disease expert. His work focuses on research and policy related to large-scale public health crises including HIV, AIDS and COVID-19, according to a Jan. 27 press release shared with Becker's

Dr. del Rio has been a member of the Emory faculty since 1996. He currently serves as the Leon L. Haley, Jr. MD, Distinguished Professor of Medicine in the division of infectious diseases at Emory and as executive associate dean for Emory at Grady Health, among other leadership positions. Dr. del Rio's position will take effect March 1. He will succeed current Dean Vikas Sukhatme, MD, who is stepping down to resume his role as a full-time faculty member.
