Mary Klotman, MD, will complete her service as executive vice president for health affairs and chief academic officer of Duke Health and dean of Duke University School of Medicine on June 30, 2027.
Dr. Klotman has spent two decades in senior leadership at the Durham, N.C.-based university. She has served as dean since 2017 and became Duke’s first executive vice president for health affairs in 2023, according to a Sept. 28 Duke news release.
During her tenure, the School of Medicine recruited national leaders, expanded interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthened support for faculty, students and trainees, according to the release. She also helped guide Duke Health through the growth of artificial intelligence, data science and computational medicine across research, education and care.
“From her investments in faculty through the Duke Science and Technology initiative and the creation of the Duke Health Integrated Practice to her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and in navigating the changing landscape of academic medicine, Mary has positioned Duke to lead in an increasingly interconnected era of medicine and science,” Duke President Vincent Price said in the release.
Dr. Klotman earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from Duke and completed her residency and fellowship training there. A physician-scientist whose research focuses on HIV infection, she previously chaired the university’s department of medicine and is a past president of the Association of Professors of Medicine and the Association of American Physicians.
Details of a national search for her successor will be announced in the coming weeks, according to the release.
