Shane Strum was named permanent president and CEO of Hollywood, Fla.-based Memorial Healthcare System, a role he has held on an interim basis since 2024 while also leading Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health, a Memorial spokesperson confirmed to Becker’s.

The boards of commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District and the North Broward Hospital District voted unanimously in favor of the decision in separate special meetings Sept. 2, the spokesperson said. Each board was required to independently approve the shared CEO arrangement, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel

Mr. Strum has led Broward Health since 2021 and is the first person to lead both taxpayer-funded districts simultaneously.

The districts were created by the Florida Legislature; they operate independently with separate boards and compete for patients, physicians and staff. Together, Mr. Strum will oversee 10 hospitals, about 28,000 employees, two level 1 adult trauma centers and a pediatric trauma center.

Since Mr. Strum took the interim role, the systems have begun collaborating on maternal care, stalled construction projects at both have advanced, and several Broward Health executives now hold the same roles at Memorial, including COO, general counsel and CIO, according to the Sun Sentinel, which reported the vote Sept. 2. The districts must still operate as independent entities subject to antitrust rules.

At the Becker's 11th Annual IT + Revenue Cycle Conference: The Future of AI & Digital Health, taking place September 14–17 in Chicago, healthcare executives and digital leaders from across the country will come together to explore how AI, interoperability, cybersecurity, and revenue cycle innovation are transforming care delivery, strengthening financial performance, and driving the next era of digital health.
