Bob Barnett, chairman of the St. Vincent’s board, made the announcement about Mr. O’Neil’s resignation but provided little explanation of why he was leaving the Catholic system, which is part of St. Louis-based Ascension Health. Mr. O’Neil served as president and CEO for five years.

St. Vincent’s appointed Neeysa Biddle, former executive vice president and COO, as interim CEO while the system conducts a national search. Ms. Biddle retired from the heath system in 2011 to help launch Ascension’s leadership academy, where she most recently served as a program director.
