Here are five things to know about the departure.

1. Mr. Widener discussed retiring from the hospital “for some time,” according to the report.

2. Mr. Widener served as Jefferson’s first interim CEO and assisted the facility through its transition to being managed by Pioneer Health Services in June 2013. He again served as interim CEO following the death of Jefferson’s full-time CEO Doug Arbour.

3. He took the position of CEO once again last year after the previous CEO Jim Heitzenrater retired.

4. Pioneer cut ties with Jefferson in July, and the hospital halted contracted payments to Pioneer save for Mr. Widener’s salary, cellphone and travel expenses, according to the report. Mr. Widener said he could remain CEO through Oct. 27. However, the hospital authority said his retirement was effective immediately.

5. Three potential CEOs are on Jefferson officials’ radar.
