Under Mr. Newton’s leadership, Swedish Covenant has become one of the largest and most successful independent community teaching hospitals in Chicago. He has led Swedish Covenant in developing a reputation of technological and service excellence, compassion and commitment to creating a healing environment for patients. One of Mr. Newton’s most interesting and effective strategies involved his suggestion that employees forgo their annual pay increases to avoid layoffs at the hospital when the recession began to take a toll early in 2010. The deal was that if employees introduced operational efficiencies to help the hospital reach its financial goals; they would get the withheld money back, in full. Both the hospital staff and Mr. Newton fulfilled the parameters resulting in a successful exercise.

In addition to his responsibilities at Swedish Covenant, Mr. Newton is active in professional and community organizations. He is a member of the board of Illinois Hospital Association and the Chicago Hospital Risk Pooling Program. He is also a member of the advisory board at North Park University School of Business in Chicago.
