Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai has promoted Sumeet Chugh, MD, to serve as vice dean and chief artificial intelligence health research officer.

In this newly created role, Dr. Chugh will lead efforts to translate AI-driven research into clinical trials and patient care. He will also oversee the health system’s new Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Research Center, which supports departments and institutes across Cedars-Sinai in integrating AI into their research, according to a May 6 news release.

Dr. Chugh, a sudden cardiac arrest expert, has published more than 275 research papers. His work has led to novel methods for predicting and preventing the condition, including combining emergency response data, medical records and biological samples to detect imminent cardiac arrest.

“Dr. Chugh is a foremost investigator in both heart rhythm and AI research,” Jeffrey Golden, MD, executive vice dean for research and education at Cedars-Sinai, said in a statement. “His use of AI to assess the risk for sudden cardiac arrest has the potential to advance the field and save lives. We are eager for him to broaden his AI research experience to all areas of clinical care at Cedars-Sinai.”

At the Becker's 11th Annual IT + Revenue Cycle Conference: The Future of AI & Digital Health, taking place September 14–17 in Chicago, healthcare executives and digital leaders from across the country will come together to explore how AI, interoperability, cybersecurity, and revenue cycle innovation are transforming care delivery, strengthening financial performance, and driving the next era of digital health.
