CDC names leaders to newly formed offices

The CDC has tapped leaders for two new offices crafted as part of an organizational overhaul to improve operations and incorporate health equity, Politico reported Jan. 24.

Leandris Liburd, PhD, was named acting director of the Office of Health Equity. She has served the CDC and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry as associate director for minority health and health equity since 2011, according to the center's website

Jennifer Layden, MD, PhD, will be the acting director for the Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance and Technology. She served as deputy director of the Office of Science before assuming her current role, associate deputy director for public health science and surveillance.

Dr. Liburd and Dr. Layden's offices will report to the Office of the Director, per a proposed new structure. Rochelle Walensky, MD, the CDC's director, will have more direct oversight of several divisions, including health equity and data.
