CarolinaEast Health System names new CEO 

Michael Smith has been named the CEO and president of New Bern, N.C.-based CarolinaEast Health System.

Mr. Smith most recently served as vice president of physician practice management since 2010, according to a June 2 press release. He is stepping into the role left by Ray Leggett, who is set to retire June 30. The system sees around 390,000 patients annually. 

“It is truly an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to serve in this leadership role in a growing and dynamic health care system that includes the hospital where I was born,” said Mr. Smith. “I look forward to working with the CarolinaEast Board, our administrative leaders, outstanding physicians, and our very capable and dedicated staff to continue to serve our community and region.”
