Mr. Peterson has headed planning for Stanford’s new hospital project since 2009. He also served as interim CEO in 2001, the last time the hospital conducted a search for a new head executive.

Ms. Marsh, who has led Stanford since 2002, has been praised for stabilizing hospital finances after a failed merger with UC San Francisco Medical Center. She will step down at the end of August.
