If the board of trustees does not find a replacement by Sept. 30, however, Ms. Zane will continue as chief executive. In addition, at the request of the board of trustees, Ms. Zane will remain at the medical center for one year as vice chairman of the board and a paid consultant to assist with the leadership transition.

Ms. Zane has been CEO of Tufts Medical Center for seven years, during which she helped change the center’s loss of over $18 million in 2004 to a gain of $6.9 million in 2010.

Although she is retiring, Ms. Zane has been offered positions on the boards of various companies and plans to continue public speaking and to write a book of management advice.
