Baxter taps Jose Almeida as CEO: 7 things to know

Deerfield, Ill.-based Baxter International, a maker of hospital and renal products, has named Jose Almeida chairman and CEO, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Here are seven things to know about Mr. Almeida.

1. He begins his job Jan. 1.

2. Mr. Almeida will succeed Robert Parkinson Jr., who announced his retirement as CEO earlier this year, according to the report. Mr. Almeida will join the company immediately in an unspecified executive position.

3. Most recently, he served as an operating executive in the global healthcare group at Carlyle Group.

4. Mr. Almeida previously was chairman and CEO of Covidien, a healthcare products company.

5. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Escola de Engenharia Maua in São Paulo, Brazil.

6. Mr. Almeida joins Baxter as it is rebuilding after the spinoff of its pharmaceutical operations into a separate company called Baxalta, according to the Chicago Tribune.

7. The announcement of Mr. Almeida's appointment also comes the same week the company said it plans to cut about 1,400 jobs by the end of the year after seeing a sharp drop in third-quarter profits.
