24 new CEOs appointed to top health systems in 2022

Last year, 24 new CEOs were appointed to lead top 150 health systems (by revenue), marking a return to pre-pandemic turnover levels, according to a new report from The Health Management Academy.

The CEO turnover count for 2022 is double the number from 2021, according to the report. More than half of the 2022 CEO class (58 percent) are internal hires, and 42 percent served in COO roles before taking on the CEO position. One (4 percent) of the new CEOs is female, down from the pre-pandemic female CEO turnover rate of 19 percent.

The Health Management Academy said its list of 24 new leading health system CEOs is based on secondary quantitative data from 2022 for the largest 150 health systems in the U.S. (those with the highest total operating revenue, validated by 2019 health system financial statements). Leaders were not identified as new CEOs if there was a health system merger or acquisition, and they were the existing CEO of either system. Interim CEOs were also not identified as new CEOs. More information about the methodology is available here.
